Dan Patterson: Creepy Sleepy Show #92 - The Creepy Diet

    Ahhh, hippy diets. I'll be thinking of you while I'm drinking a nice cold beer, taking a smoke break between quarters and indulging in some serious deep-dish pizza as I watch football.

    By the way, you know what really works for staying healthy. Eat less, exercise more! Quitting smoking helps, and no fast food. But drinking epsom salt?!? Y'all are nuts.

    Enjoy your descent into the world of the raw food hippies.

    @The Devil

    I tend to agree with you when it comes to healthy practice.

    Allow me to reiterate: Although this is a diet, it is more of an exercise in lifestyle change; can I change my lifestyle? Can you? We talk a lot of shit on the show, and this is us backing some of it up.

    I totally agree, however, that a healthy lifestyle is a balanced one. I CAN'T be an extremist and go all hard-core for the rest of my life. But, I can make an attempt to see what that is like.

    Having psoratic arthritis, I have little choice I maintaining a somewhat healthy life style. I run every day, make sure to get my heart rate up, watch my wheat and carb intake (little or no beer), eat greens, etc.

    I'd say that podcasting would reach more people than pirate radio and is less risky also.

    I do my podcast for very cheep. I use Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) which is free and has versions for Mac, PC and Linux. You can do all you mixing inside the software. I do it so each song or my voice is it's own "track" I also use a cheep microphone. My podcast isn't always the highest quality, but I think it sounds pretty darn good. Plus, I like to think that I'm kickin' it "Lo-Fi".

    I applaud your attempt to shock yourself out of your comfort zone. But in all honesty, there are better ways to do it.

    First off, drinking epsom salts can kill a lot of really healthy enzymes and bacteria that occur in your digestive tract naturally. I'm not sure if there's any serious damage done by the lemon pepper concoction, but I imiagine it ain't to tasty.

    Speaking from a point of view, my wife has all sorts of digestive issues, where I have watched someone go through some of the nastier things that can happen to you, I will say this. The epsom salt, lemon pepper cleansing thing may actually be doing more harm than good. I'm not trying to discourage you from being healthier in general (I go to the gym 5 days a week, something I never would have imagined even 6 months ago) what I am trying to discourage you from doing is hurting yourself.

    I have known a lot of people who go through these types of shock diets (granted this is not a long term thing for you, as you've made perfectly clear) and really what they end up doing is sending your body into a shocked state where when you reintegrate the types of food left out by this program you either have problems digesting them and/or you can't get enough of them.

    I would never dream of telling you to not do everything you can to be healthy, I want all of my friends to be around as long as possible, but if one of said friends needs a good dose of common sense, I'll make sure that I'm there to offer it.

    SPeaking of lifestyle change, I have changed my lifestyle radically over the last six months (although I still haven't managed to quit the smoking, damn nicotene) but I almost never drink, eat much healthier (for Chrissakes, I bring yogurt to work) and have a regular exercise regimen and I will say this, I haven't felt this good in a long time. I have more energy, am replacing fat with muscle and just feel like I'm in a better mood all the time. Some of you know me pretty well and know that when it came to being healthy, I was not so good at it. Lifestyle change is a good thing, especially as we move past the days where our metabolism functions like a teenage male sex drive, but there's a reason why so many of these things are fads, and that's because they don't work.

    I applaud you on the yoga, I've done it, but I tell you, it freakin' hurts. I still prefer regular cardio and weight lifting, but anything you can do is better than nothing. And it should help you're arthritis, I think (depending on how your specific version, of which I am unfamiliar with, effects your muscles and joints) and I am quite sure (given that I have never seen you overweight a day in my life) that you do maintain a fairly healthy lifestyle.

    Just trying to look out for you with a little wise-ass humor!
